I found a snake (Kingsnake Prairie) on a Kentucky website that looks a lot like your snake:

The snake looked like a Gopher snake to me but it could have been a night snake also. I have never been the greatest at identifying snakes. You might want to pick up a survival book that has pictures of animals and plants it could help you identify species that you happen upon.
